Drain cleaning

Drain cleaning in Tampa

Written by Jake, owner of Hometown Hero's Plumbing · 20+ years in plumbing · Last reviewed October 3, 2026

Quick answer

If more than one drain is slow or backing up at the same time, the clog is usually in the main line, not the fixture — that needs a professional drain cleaning. Hometown Hero's Plumbing clears sink, tub, floor, and main line clogs across Tampa Bay, then tells you what caused it so it doesn't come back.

Signs you need a drain cleaning

  • Water drains slowly in a sink, tub, or shower even after plunging
  • Gurgling from a toilet when the washing machine or tub drains
  • Water backs up in the tub or floor drain when you flush
  • Sewage smell near drains or in the yard
  • More than one fixture clogging at once — a sign of a main line or sewer problem

What causes clogs in Tampa Bay homes

Kitchen grease, food scraps, wipes labeled "flushable," and hair are the everyday culprits. In this area, two local factors make it worse: mineral scale from hard water narrows pipes over time, and many older homes still have cast iron drain lines whose rough, corroded walls catch debris.

Tree roots are another frequent cause. Roots look for moisture and can work into small cracks or loose joints in an underground line, especially in established neighborhoods with mature oaks.

How we clear the drain

We start by asking where the backup shows up and which fixtures are affected — that tells us whether it's a branch line or the main. Then we clear it with the right tool for the pipe: a hand or machine auger for fixture lines, or a main line machine through a cleanout for whole-house backups.

If clogs keep coming back, the problem is usually the pipe, not the clog. In that case we'll talk through options such as a camera inspection or sewer line repair before recommending any bigger work.

What affects the cost

Call to discuss your situation — you talk through the work and pricing before anything moves forward.

  • Where the clog is (a single sink vs. the main line)
  • Whether there's an accessible cleanout
  • Whether a camera inspection is needed to find the cause
  • After-hours or emergency timing

Common questions

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?

We don't recommend it. Chemical cleaners rarely reach a deep clog, can damage older pipes, and make the job hazardous for whoever clears the line next. A plunger or a call is safer.

Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?

Repeat kitchen clogs usually come from grease buildup further down the line. A professional cleaning removes the buildup rather than just poking a hole through it. See clogged drain warning signs.

Do you clear main line clogs?

Yes. Whole-house backups are cleared through a cleanout with a main line machine. If the line is damaged, we'll explain your sewer line options.
